Growing to 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) across, this fully aquatic crab displays lively foraging and climbing antics, making it a rewarding watch for beginners.​

Despite its endangered wild status, captive specimens adapt well with proper care. Beginners should start with a cycled 20+ gallon tank featuring a tight-fitting lid—crabs are expert escape artists—and ample hiding spots using rocks, driftwood, and sturdy plants to mimic their natural burrowing environment. Provide access to air via structures if desired, though full submersion suits them best. Maintain pristine water through 25% weekly changes and monthly deep cleans to handle their protein-rich waste.​

Feed daily an amount consumed in minutes: sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched veggies, bloodworms, or snails for hunting.
