Description

The Agassizi Dwarf Cichlid is native to the Amazon basin and nearby regions of northern South America, where it inhabits slowly moving jungle river tributaries. It thrives in environments with dense vegetation, leaf litter, and jungle canopy, providing protection and hunting grounds for small insects, crustaceans, and worms. Known for its vibrant red, blue, and yellow coloration, it is a popular aquarium species, though it is somewhat difficult to care for due to its sensitivity to water quality and temperature fluctuations.

Aquarium Care:
Agassizi Dwarf Cichlids require stable water conditions, including temperatures between 76°F and 86°F, a pH of 5.0 to 7.0, and water hardness between 2-12 KH. They prefer a densely planted aquarium with medium water flow, diffused lighting, and a sandy or fine gravel substrate. For small groups, a single male with several females is recommended to reduce aggression. A larger tank (150 gallons or more) is needed for large groups to avoid territorial disputes.

Feeding & Nutrition:
As carnivores, Agassizi Dwarf Cichlids primarily eat insects, larvae, small crustaceans, and worms in the wild. In the aquarium, they thrive on a varied diet of frozen and freeze-dried foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill, and tubifex worms. High-quality carnivore flakes or pellets can also be offered, but they should be supplemented with live or frozen food to maintain vibrant coloration and a healthy immune system. Feeding smaller meals 2-3 times a day is ideal.
