The Ellioti Cichlid (Thorichthys maculipinnis, historically T. ellioti) is a medium-sized, laterally compressed cichlid originating from Mexican freshwater rivers and streams. Adults typically reach around 12–15 cm, with males growing slightly larger and often developing more intense coloration and extended fins. In the aquarium, this species is appreciated for its shimmering blue spangles, orange-red ventral area and the characteristic dark spot on the gill cover that gives rise to the common name “Spotcheek Cichlid”.

For the beginner aquarist seeking a showpiece fish that is not overly aggressive, this species offers a good balance of manageable size, attractive appearance and interesting behavior. Kept in the right conditions, Ellioti Cichlids are active but not frantic swimmers, spending much of their time near the bottom and midwater levels while gently sifting the substrate.

Aquarium requirements

To keep Ellioti Cichlids successfully, a spacious aquarium with a long footprint is essential so that territories can be formed without constant conflict. A minimum of 200–300 l, with at least 100–120 cm length, is recommended for a pair or small group, while larger community setups provide additional swimming space and reduce territorial pressure.

Water conditions should be stable, with temperatures between 23–28 °C and neutral to slightly alkaline water (approximately pH 6.8–8.0) and moderate hardness around 8–12 °dGH. Strong, efficient filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as this species is sensitive to elevated nitrate and benefits from clean, well-oxygenated water.

The substrate should be fine, soft sand, as Ellioti Cichlids naturally take mouthfuls of sand and sift it through their gills while searching for food. Coarse or sharp substrates can damage the delicate gill tissue, so smooth sand is strongly recommended for long-term health. Décor can include securely placed smooth rocks, driftwood roots and sturdy plants such as Echinodorus, leaving open areas at the front for free swimming and feeding.

Behavior and tank mates

Outside of breeding periods, Thorichthys maculipinnis is generally considered a relatively peaceful cichlid that can coexist with appropriately sized, robust companions. Suitable tank mates include medium livebearers (e.g., swordtails), peaceful Central American cichlids of similar temperament and active dither fish that are too large to be viewed as prey.

Very small, slow-moving or long-finned fish should be avoided, as they may be harassed or stressed by the Ellioti Cichlids’ natural curiosity and territorial displays. Conversely, large, highly aggressive cichlids can intimidate and outcompete this species, which is not particularly assertive compared to some other Central American cichlids.

When breeding, pairs become more territorial and will vigorously defend their chosen site, typically a flat stone or a sheltered area in the substrate. During this time, they display vivid colors and elaborate courtship behaviors, and both parents participate in guarding eggs and fry, providing captivating natural behavior for observers.

Feeding and nutrition

In the wild and in captivity, Ellioti Cichlids are omnivorous with a slight carnivorous tendency, feeding on small invertebrates and plant matter. In the aquarium they readily accept a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes, cichlid pellets, slow-sinking granules and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis and daphnia.

Regular inclusion of vegetable-based foods, such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables, supports good digestion, coloration and overall vitality. High-protein foods like bloodworms should be offered sparingly, as overuse can contribute to digestive issues in this species. Multiple small feedings throughout the day closely mimic natural foraging behavior and help maintain optimal body condition without overloading the filtration system.

Suitability for beginners

With appropriate tank size and stable water conditions, Ellioti Cichlids are well-suited to beginner aquarists who wish to take their first steps into keeping Central American cichlids. Their relatively peaceful temperament, hardy nature and willingness to accept a wide variety of foods make them forgiving of minor mistakes, provided regular maintenance and monitoring are maintained.

For newcomers, this species offers an excellent introduction to observing complex cichlid social structures, courtship and parental care without the extreme aggression seen in some larger relatives. Clear guidance on tank size, décor and compatible tank mates will help ensure that buyers can enjoy a thriving, active display with these striking fish.
