The Black Hamburg Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a striking livebearing freshwater fish, distinguished by its elegant jet-black coloration and characteristic elongated “sword” extension on the lower part of the male’s tail fin. Popular among aquarists for its beauty, hardiness, and active swimming behavior, this species is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced hobbyists.

Care and Requirements:

• Tank Size: A minimum of 80 liters (20 gallons) is recommended to accommodate their active swimming and social behavior.

• Water Parameters: Thrives in temperatures between 22–28°C, with a pH of 7.0–8.3 and moderate hardness.

• Diet: Omnivorous; accepts a wide range of foods including high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods. A balanced diet with plant-based content is beneficial.

• Temperament: Generally peaceful but best kept with other livebearers or similarly sized community fish. Males may occasionally display territorial behavior, so maintaining a good male-to-female ratio is advised.

• Aquarium Setup: Provide open swimming areas along with plants and décor for shelter. A secure lid is recommended as swordtails are known jumpers.
