Description

Guppies are small, peaceful, and easy-to-care-for fish native to tropical pools in South America and the Caribbean. Through selective breeding, they are now available in a variety of vibrant colors. Guppies are livebearers with the ability to store sperm, so they may quickly populate your tank.

Tankmates: Guppies are friendly community fish and thrive with other non-aggressive species, like platys, mollies, neon tetras, and zebrafish. However, their fry may be eaten by other fish, so smaller tankmates are recommended for fry survival. Many keep guppies in species-only tanks, and a common guideline is one inch of fish per gallon of water. It’s also best to keep two or three females for every male.

Habitat & Care: Guppies are ideal for beginners due to their low-maintenance nature. They need a tank with plants and soft décor and should be kept in a sufficiently large tank to accommodate their active behavior. To control population growth, separate males and females as females can store sperm and give birth multiple times after mating.

Tank Requirements:

  • Heater: Guppies thrive in temperatures in the 70s, so an aquarium heater is essential.
  • Filtration: A filter is necessary to remove waste and maintain water quality, preventing illnesses.

Diet & Feeding: Guppies are omnivores and do well on a diet of micro pellets, which are more nutritious than flakes. You can supplement their diet with frozen foods once or twice a week. Feed them once or twice a day, offering small amounts of food until it is consumed. Feeding time is also a good opportunity to observe your fish’s health.
