Rotala rotundifolia, native to Southeast Asia, has been a staple of the freshwater aquarium hobby for decades. The name rotundifolia translates to “round-leaved,” which refers to the circular leaves the plant grows when submerged in its emersed (out-of-water) form. Once submersed in your aquarium, however, it transforms into a breathtaking display of narrow, lance-shaped leaves that sway gracefully with the water current.

• Planting: Gently separate the individual stems and plant them into the substrate about 1–2 centimeters apart. This ensures that light can reach the lower leaves as the plant grows taller.

• Trimming: Don’t be afraid to prune it! When the stems get too tall, simply snip them with sharp aquascaping scissors. This encourages the plant to branch out sideways, creating a much bushier, denser look.

• Propagation: Congratulations, you have free plants! Take the tops you just trimmed off, strip the leaves from the bottom centimeter of the stem, and push them back into the substrate. They will quickly develop new root systems.
