Description

The Uaru Cichlid (Uaru amphiacanthoides), native to the Amazon basin, is both a staple food for local communities and a captivating aquarium species. Although less common in the trade, it is prized for its adaptability, peaceful temperament, and unique greenish-brown coloration with black markings. Juveniles display a mottled version of the adult pattern.

Key Care Highlights:

  • Tank Requirements: Spacious tanks (75–125 gallons), open swimming areas, and hardy decorations like driftwood or clay pots. Avoid live plants, as they will be consumed.
  • Water Conditions: Warm, soft, slightly acidic water (80–84°F, pH ~5.5) is ideal but can be adjusted gradually.
  • Diet: Omnivorous; readily accepts pellets, flakes, worms, algae-based snacks, and plants.

Breeding:

Uaru Cichlids are substrate spawners, laying hundreds of eggs. Fry feed on a nutrient-rich slime from parents before transitioning to small foods. To protect fry, parents should be removed after two weeks.

Summary:

The Uaru Cichlid is a peaceful, adaptable species ideal for medium-to-large aquariums. With proper care, it makes a fascinating and rewarding addition for experienced aquarists.
