The Silvertip Tetra (Hasemania nana) is an exceptionally hardy, lively, and eye-catching freshwater fish native to the streams of Brazil. Characterized by its brilliant copper-amber body and distinct silver-white tips on its fins, this species brings continuous movement and color to the mid-levels of your aquarium. Unlike many other tetras, they lack an adipose fin (the small fin between the dorsal and tail fin), making them physically unique.

They are an ideal choice for beginner aquarists due to their resilience to fluctuating water parameters and their peaceful, social nature when kept in a school.

The Silvertip Tetra is a highly social, schooling species. In the wild, they navigate heavily vegetated blackwater streams. To feel secure and display their most radiant coloration in captivity, they must be kept in a group of at least 6 to 10 individuals. Keeping them in a proper school drastically reduces natural stress and curbs any mild fin-nipping behavior, as they will focus their playful energy entirely on each other.

Designing the Perfect Tank Environment

For a beginner aquarist, setting up a successful habitat for Hasemania nana is highly straightforward:

  • Substrate & Decor: Use a dark substrate (sand or fine gravel) to contrast and enhance their rich copper tones. Incorporate driftwood branches and rocks to mimic their natural river ecosystem.

  • Live Plants: Provide areas of dense planting along the back and sides of the tank (using hardy beginner plants like Anubias, Java Fern, or Amazon Swords) while leaving the center open for free-swimming.

  • Filtration & Flow: They appreciate a gentle to moderate water current. Ensure your filter is fully cycled before adding them to the tank.

Diet and Nutritional Guidelines

Silvertip Tetras are opportunistic omnivores and are remarkably unpicky eaters. For optimal health and vibrant colors, feed them a varied diet:

  1. Base Diet: A premium daily flake or micro-pellet formulated for tropical fish.

  2. Nutritional Boosts: Supplement 2–3 times a week with frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.

Beginner Tip: Feed them only what they can consume within two minutes, once or twice a day. Undigested food sinks to the bottom and spoils the water quality.

Ideal Tankmates

Because of their active nature, choose tankmates that share a similar temperament and size. Excellent companions include:

  • Other peaceful tetras (like Neon or Rummy-nose Tetras)

  • Corydoras catfish (excellent bottom-dwellers)

  • Rasboras and Danios

  • Dwarf Gouramis

Note: Avoid housing them with slow-moving, long-finned fish like Fancy Guppies or Betta fish, as the active nature of the Silvertip may cause stress or minor fin-nipping.
