Transform Your Aquarium with Fluval Bio-Stratum
Fluval Bio-Stratum is a revolutionary biological substrate specifically engineered for beginner and experienced aquarists who want a thriving, balanced freshwater aquarium. Made from 100% naturally mineral-rich volcanic soil collected from the foothills of Mount Aso in Japan, Bio-Stratum provides everything your aquatic plants, shrimp, and fish need to flourish.
What Makes Bio-Stratum Special?
Unlike ordinary gravel or sand, Bio-Stratum is infused with dormant beneficial nitrifying bacteria that activate immediately upon contact with water. This unique feature kickstarts the nitrogen cycle, rapidly breaking down harmful ammonia and stabilizing water conditions—making it perfect for new tanks.
Key Benefits for Beginner Aquarists
| Benefit | Why It Matters for You |
|---|---|
| Instant Biological Activity | Bacteria activate immediately, reducing setup time and helping your tank cycle faster |
| Ammonia Reduction | Rapidly lowers harmful ammonia levels, protecting new fish and shrimp |
| Easy Root Penetration | 1 mm lightweight granules are non-compacting, allowing even delicate plant roots to spread easily |
| Natural pH Balance | Maintains neutral to slightly acidic pH—ideal for most tropical plants, fish, and shrimp |
| Rich in Nutrients | Contains minerals, trace elements, and nutrients that promote explosive plant growth |
| Crystal Clear Water | Will not stain water and helps control organic discoloration from driftwood |
| Safe & Clean | Unique curing and heat treatment eliminates parasites and extends soil life |
Perfect For:
-
New Aquariums: Establishes biological filtration quickly and stabilizes water conditions
-
Planted Tanks: Provides nutrients directly at root level for vigorous plant growth
-
Shrimp Tanks: Creates ideal mildly acidic conditions for crystal red, neocaridina, and other shrimp
-
Delicate Root Plants: Fine granules allow plants with fine root systems to thrive
-
Tropical Fish: Softens water naturally by reducing carbonate hardness
How Much Bio-Stratum Do You Need?
Calculating the right amount is simple. Measure your tank’s length and width in centimeters, then decide on substrate厚度 (thickness):
Formula: Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Thickness (cm) ÷ 1000 = kg needed
Example: For a 90 × 60 cm tank with 8 cm substrate depth:
90 × 60 × 8 ÷ 1000 = 43.2 kg
Size Recommendations:
-
2kg: Small tanks (up to 30L) or top layer in larger tanks
-
4kg: Medium tanks (30–60L)
-
8kg: Larger tanks (60–100L) or as bottom layer with cap
Setup Instructions for Beginners
-
Gently rinse Bio-Stratum in a bowl (not under strong water pressure) to remove dust
-
Add to dry tank first before filling with water to prevent cloudiness
-
Consider dry start method for plants with particularly fine roots
-
Fill slowly with dechlorinated water using a plate to avoid disturbing substrate
-
Monitor ammonia levels closely during the first 2–3 weeks as bacteria activate
Important Notes for New Aquarists
-
Bio-Stratum is a natural organic soil and may slightly increase ammonia initially—this is normal as bacteria activate
-
The pH will slowly become more acidic over time, especially if your water has low KH (carbonate hardness)
-
Do not over-rinse—gentle rinsing only is needed to preserve beneficial bacteria
-
Ideal for freshwater aquariums only; not suitable for marine/saltwater setups
