Gold Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus)

The Gold Gourami is a captivating and hardy freshwater fish, bred from the Blue Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus). Renowned for its striking golden coloration and peaceful temperament, this species is a popular choice for community aquariums. It adapts well to a variety of water conditions, making it ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Gold Gouramis are best housed in aquariums of at least 90 cm (36″) in length, with ample planting and decorations to provide shelter and visual barriers. Males may display mild territorial behavior, particularly toward one another, so maintaining multiple females or keeping a single male per tank is recommended. The sexes are easily distinguished by the dorsal fin—males possess a longer, pointed fin, while females have a shorter, rounded one.

Care Requirements:

  • Temperature: 23–30°C

  • Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, dH 5–20°

  • Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6″)

  • Lighting: No special requirements

  • Compatibility: Suitable for peaceful community aquariums; avoid housing with long-finned species

Feeding:
An omnivorous species that thrives on a varied diet of high-quality flakes, granules, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mosquito larvae. Supplementation with plant-based foods or soft, fine-leaved vegetation is beneficial.

Breeding:
Gold Gouramis are bubble nest builders. The male constructs a nest at the water’s surface, initiates spawning, and tends to the fertilized eggs until hatching. The female should be removed after spawning to prevent stress or aggression.

Graceful, adaptable, and visually striking, the Gold Gourami makes an excellent centerpiece fish in a well-maintained community aquarium.
