Opaline Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus)

The Opaline Gourami is a captivating and hardy freshwater fish, well-suited for peaceful community aquariums. A selectively bred color variant of the Blue Gourami, this species displays an attractive marbled blue and white pattern that adds elegance and contrast to any aquascape.

Adaptable to a wide range of water conditions, the Opaline Gourami thrives in temperatures between 23–30°C and a pH of 6.0–8.0. Males are easily identified by their elongated, pointed dorsal fins and more vibrant coloration. Though generally peaceful, males may show mild territorial behavior, particularly toward one another.

This omnivorous species accepts a variety of foods, including high-quality flakes, granules, and frozen offerings such as brine shrimp and mosquito larvae. Providing a well-planted aquarium of at least 90 cm in length allows natural behavior, territory establishment, and visual separation among individuals.

The Opaline Gourami (Trichogaster trichopterus), also known by its various synonyms including Labrus trichopterus and Osphromenus siamensis, is an elegant and hardy freshwater species, popular for its striking marbled blue-and-white coloration and graceful movements. This captive-bred colour form is a domesticated strain of the Blue Gourami, well-suited to community aquariums with peaceful tank mates.

Growing up to approximately 15 cm in length, the Opaline Gourami thrives in a wide range of water conditions with a preferred temperature of 23–30°C and pH between 6.0 and 8.0. It is an adaptable species requiring no special lighting and is compatible with a variety of community fish, though it should not be housed with other long-finned species due to occasional territorial behavior in males.
