Deep Dive: How Seachem De nitrate Works
For beginner aquarists, managing the nitrogen cycle can feel like a balancing act. Fish waste and uneaten food turn into toxic Ammonia, which turns into Nitrite, and finally into Nitrate. While live plants and water changes help manage nitrates, Seachem De nitrate provides a continuous, biological safety net.
Unlike chemical resins that exhaust quickly and need replacing, De nitrate is a permanent biological filter media. It features a high surface area uniformity that hosts millions of microscopic bacteria:
-
Outer Surface (High Oxygen): Supports aerobic bacteria that break down toxic ammonia and nitrite.
-
Inner Core (Low Oxygen): Creates an ideal anaerobic zone where specialized bacteria break down nitrate molecules into harmless nitrogen gas.
⚠️ The Golden Rule: Flow Rate Matters!
To successfully eliminate nitrate, water must move through the media slowly. If the water flows too fast, oxygen will penetrate the deep core of the stone, preventing the nitrate-eating anaerobic bacteria from growing.
-
For Nitrate Removal: Ensure your filter’s flow rate is restricted to less than 50 US gallons (200 Liters) per hour.
-
Note: If your flow rate cannot be adjusted below this, we recommend using Seachem Matrix, which functions identically but is optimized for high-flow environments.
How to Install and Maintain
-
Rinse Before Use: Dust may accumulate during shipping. Rinse the bagged media thoroughly under dechlorinated tap water or aquarium water before introducing it to your system.
-
Placement: Place the pre-bagged media in an area of your filter where water is forced to pass through it cleanly. For best results, place it after your mechanical filtration (sponges/floss) so it doesn’t get clogged with physical debris.
-
Maintenance: Do not replace the media! It is a permanent home for your bio-colony. If it becomes dirty, simply rinse it gently in a bucket of extracted aquarium water during your routine water change.
