Vallisneria australis (Gigantea), or Giant Vallisneria, is a centerpiece background plant native to Australia. Its vibrant green, translucent, strap-shaped leaves grow vertically toward the light, eventually undulating along the surface of the water. This growth habit creates a beautiful “jungle” effect that mimics natural river systems, diffusing bright light and making your fish feel secure and stress-free.

Unlike delicate tissue-cultured plants, Giant Vallisneria is remarkably resilient. It possesses a robust root system that, once established, allows the plant to absorb excess nutrients directly from your aquarium substrate and water column. This active nutrient uptake helps outcompete annoying algae, keeping your tank cleaner. It does not require expensive high-tech lighting setups or pressurized CO2 injection systems to thrive.

• Where to Plant: Due to its immense height potential, always plant Vallisneria australis in the background of your aquarium.

• How to Plant: Gently press the roots into a nutrient-rich substrate or gravel. Crucial Tip: Ensure the light-green “crown” (the base where the leaves meet the roots) remains entirely visible above the substrate. Burying the crown will cause the plant to rot.

• Propagation: Sit back and let nature do the work! Once settled, the plant sends out horizontal runners along the substrate, producing new, independent plantlets. You can easily snip these runners to reposition the new plants elsewhere.

Ongoing Care & Maintenance

While Giant Vallisneria is low-maintenance, a few simple practices will ensure optimal health:

• Substrate Nutrition: As heavy root feeders, they appreciate root tabs pushed into the substrate near their base every few months, especially in plain gravel tanks.

• Trimming: If the leaves grow too long and block too much surface light, do not cut them horizontally mid-blade, as the tips will turn brown. Instead, carefully trim the longest leaves all the way down near the base of the plant.

• A Note on Liquid Carbon: Avoid heavy doses of liquid carbon supplements (such as glutaraldehyde-based products), as Vallisneria species can be sensitive to them and may “melt.”
